A tragic drowning at the Voice of America MetroPark in Mason, Ohio, has claimed the life of Sun Yue, a visitor from China who heroically tried to save a child in danger. The incident occurred Sunday evening, and has since shaken the local community and drawn heartfelt tributes from neighbors and local officials.
According to the Butler County Coroner’s Office, 46-year-old Sun Yue drowned after she entered the water to help a young child who had become distressed in the lake. The Mason Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting two people in the water near the VOA lake area.
Officials say that Yue and a 4-year-old child were both pulled from the water after an intensive search and rescue operation. While the child was safely rescued and hospitalized, Sun Yue was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sun Yue had recently arrived in Mason to visit her daughter and young grandchild. Neighbors who had grown close to her during her short stay described her as “kind,” “always smiling,” and someone who immediately embraced her community.
“She just radiated warmth,” said a neighbor interviewed by WLWT. “To learn she died saving someone else’s child only confirmed what we already felt about her—she was selfless and brave.”

Drowning accidents, even those in public parks, often raise legal questions about premises liability, especially when safety precautions may be lacking or when children are involved. While no lawsuit has been filed in this case, families impacted by similar tragedies may seek legal guidance to explore whether adequate safety signage, barriers, or supervision were present.
Sun Yue’s story is one of courage and selflessness. As her family mourns her loss, neighbors and community members are calling for improved signage and awareness around local water features.
