Preventing Child Drowning
Drowning prevention is not about one rule — it is about layers of protection, so that if one fails, another stands between a child and tragedy.
Barriers
Four-sided isolation fencing that separates the pool from the house, with self-closing and self-latching gates, is one of the most effective drowning-prevention measures available.
Supervision
Designate a sober “water watcher” whose only job is to watch swimmers. Drowning is silent — constant, undistracted supervision is essential.
Training and equipment
- Swim lessons appropriate to age
- CPR training for caregivers
- Compliant drain covers and alarms
- Life jackets in open water
Why layers matter
