What Is Suction Entrapment?

Suction entrapment occurs when a pool or spa drain’s powerful suction traps a swimmer underwater or causes catastrophic injury.

How it happens

A drain operating under strong suction can hold a limb, hair, or the body against the opening, or even cause internal injuries. It happens in seconds, often with adults nearby unable to free the victim.

The law that prevents it

The federal VGB Act requires anti-entrapment drain covers and, for some pools, a backup safety system. When these are missing, entrapment becomes possible.

Our experience

Our firm secured a $104 million verdict in a suction-entrapment case. We understand the engineering and the law these cases require.
